History of Hemingway’s

How it all Began

In 1954, Hemingway famously survived a dramatic plane crash near Murchison Falls while on safari in Uganda, an event that became one of the most remarkable stories of his adventurous life.

  • Two Plane Crashes Over the Nile

While on safari across East Africa in 1954, Ernest Hemingway and his wife Mary were flying over the Nile in Murchison Falls National Park in a small Cessna 182, when the aircraft struck a telegraph line that stretched across the river below the falls, and crashed along the riverbank. After surviving the crash, the couple were rescued by the boat known as the African Queen, and Hemingway famously insisted on continuing with a cruise along Lake Albert despite the ordeal. The Oscar-winning movie “The African Queen” was filmed in 1951 and Hemingway was fascinated by the incredible steam boat. During their attempted evacuation from Butiaba, the rescue aircraft crashed during takeoff, leaving Hemingway injured but alive. These dramatic events drew international attention and forever linked Hemingway’s adventurous legacy to the wild landscapes of Murchison Falls and the Nile.

  • A Legendary Safari Landscape

Following the widely reported crashes, the region around Murchison Falls became known internationally as one of Africa’s most dramatic safari destinations. Travelers began visiting the park to experience the powerful falls, the Nile River, and the diverse wildlife that inhabit the surrounding savannah and riverine forests.

Uhuru Falls was formed in 1962, the year Uganda gained independence, when exceptionally high water levels on the Nile forced a new channel through the rock beside Murchison Falls. The powerful flow created a second waterfall just a short distance from the main falls, and it was named “Uhuru,” meaning freedom in Swahili, to commemorate the nation’s independence. Today, Uhuru Falls stands as both a dramatic natural feature and a symbol of Uganda’s historic moment of freedom.

  • Renewed Interest in Uganda’s Wilderness Tourism

As Uganda’s tourism sector grew, conservation efforts and new safari infrastructure helped restore the reputation of Murchison Falls National Park as a premier wildlife destination. Visitors increasingly sought immersive experiences along the Nile, encouraging the development of smaller, eco-focused camps that connect guests more closely with the natural environment.

  • Development of Hemingway’s Luxury Tented Camp

Inspired by the spirit of exploration associated with Hemingway’s journey, Bruce Martin, director of Lake Albert Safaris, began constructing a new luxury tented camp along the banks of the Nile. During construction, the exact telegraph pole that caused Hemingway’s first accident at the falls was found! And the name “Hemingway’s” officially stuck! The iconic telegraph pole is proudly displayed in the camp. The camp is focused on creating a low-impact lodge that blends into the surrounding riverine forest while offering guests direct access to Murchison and Uhuru falls, fishing and exceptional sunset and sunrise views over the Nile.

  • Opening of Hemingways River Camp

Nearly seventy years after Hemingway’s dramatic experience in the region, the camp officially opened, offering a modern safari experience rooted in the history and wilderness of the Nile. Today, visitors can explore the same landscapes that once shaped one of the most famous adventure stories connected to Murchison Falls.
